Junior League of the Emerald Coast Continues to Change Area Children’s Lives
During Child Clothing Project Scheduled for October 23 and 24, 2007
FORT WALTON BEACH, FL (September 10, 2007) –The Junior League of the Emerald Coast (JLEC) announces its signature community project – Child Clothing – for October 23rd and 24th, marking the 29th year. Over 275 disadvantaged Okaloosa and Walton County elementary students will be treated to a morning shopping spree at Target in Mary Esther.
The cost to clothe a child during this project is $100. Students will receive a full wardrobe, lunch, games and arts activities. The JLEC is looking for cash donations to help sponsor these children and in-kind donations for the arts and crafts area and goodie bags.
The project began in 1979, clothing 35 children from Fort Walton Beach elementary. Since then the JLEC, through the communities support has been able to clothe over 4,300 children and expand the project to two counties. Last year 25 schools in Okaloosa County and 5 schools in Walton County participated. The students are chosen by their teachers and guidance counselors.
The Child Clothing Project provides much-needed clothing to local underprivileged children and also makes a positive impact on their self-esteem. During this special day, the students are paired with a volunteer personal shopper and select a new wardrobe, consisting of a jacket or fleece, shirts, pants, socks, underwear, and shoes. Local JLEC members and community volunteers serve as volunteer personal shoppers and help students select the correct size and fit for their new clothes and ensure a fun experience. After shopping students are treated to lunch and free time which consists of various structured games and activities. The students also receive a goody bag of donated items from community businesses.
The Child Clothing Project is one of many community projects that the JLEC plans and participates in to help improve the community. If you are interested in making a difference in a child’s life or in making a donation to the JLEC, please contact the Junior League of the Emerald Coast’s Office at (850) 862-2665.
