JLEC--Changing Children's Lives Child Clothing Project Marks 27 Years

Junior League of the Emerald Coast --Changing Children’s Lives Child Clothing Project Marks 27 Years

FORT WALTON BEACH, FL (October 18, 2006)-The Junior League of the Emerald Coast held its signature community project, Child Clothing, on October 17th & 18th 2006.  Two hundred eighty Okaloosa and Walton County elementary students participated in a morning shopping spree at Target in Fort Walton Beach. Students were treated to a full wardrobe, lunch, games, and activities.

Since 1979, the JLEC has clothed over 4,000 children. This year marks the 27th anniversary for this huge community endeavor. The Child Clothing project provides much-needed clothing to local underprivileged children and also makes a positive impact on their self-esteem. The students were chosen by their teachers and guidance counselors. Okaloosa and Walton County school boards assist with the transporting the children to and from Target.

During this special day, the students were paired with a volunteer personal shopper and select a new wardrobe, consisting of a jacket or fleece, shirts, pants, socks, underwear, and shoes. Local JLEC members and community volunteers served as personal shoppers and helped students select the correct size and fit for their new clothes and ensure a fun experience. After shopping, students were treated to lunch and a variety of activities.  The Child Clothing Project is only one of the many community activities that the JLEC plans and participates in, to help improve our community. If you are interested in making a difference in a child’s life or in making a donation to the JLEC, please contact the Junior League of the Emerald Coast’s office at (850) 862-2665.
